The figure is the first actual appearance of an evil clone of Optimus Prime, known as Scourge in the English versions of the fiction, and uses the G2 Laser Optimus mold in a new black teal and red redeco, predating the US release of the Scourge toy, and comes with trailer, sword and gun, and several missiles. Those G1-era figures look so out out of place

Always found it ironic that the official name of Black Convoy's pink sword is the "Black Sword" (Scourge's was the "Sword of Fury" in the English dub).zodconvoy wrote:Pink sword and all.

zodconvoy wrote:Black Battle Convoy is still the best black repaint I own. None of the Scourges, Nemesis Primes, or "Night Watch" repaints measure up. MP-10B is really awesome too but Black Convoy? He's the real F'n deal. Pink sword and all. Love it.
Bad@ss villains are "man" enough to use a pink sword. Heck, Darth Vader wears a skirt

fenrir72 wrote:Own the RID version. Imho, the mold really fits the "bad" Optimus better than the original heroic colors. There's something in the design that evokes me bad (in a good way)
It's interesting how this mold and the Sky-Byte are both better suited and most remembered as the 2nd usage of the mold, rather than the first. Obviously having a cartoon helps with this, but it's still interesting nonetheless.
Working toward the Year of the Goat Platinum Optimus Prime. Hopefully before TFcon next weekend I'll have that gallery completed along with the reissue of the G2 Laser Rod Optimus Prime and the e-Hobby Ultra Magnus.

Some thought the world was coming to an end while the new millennium was being ushered in, some embraced the fact that we were seeing the birth of new millennium, a new century and a new decade all in one moment at the strike of midnight that holiday season. All were milestones we were witness to, milestones that many generations can never lay claim to.
A time of change for everyone.
2000 was also a time of change and a rebirth on another level, it was the year that Takara (and one year later, Hasbro) decided it was time to take Transformers back to their roots and make them vehicles again.
Our mouths agape, our stomachs empty and hungry, our wallets open and our hopes at a fever pitch, the fandom gobbled up this new melding of Beast Wars era articulation with G1 alt mode design.
In the place of Maximals, we had Autobots again and with this revival they brought back the biggest of them all: Fortress Maximus! The biggest, most expensive US release getting another chance to live? Awesome! Finding out that he wasn't coming to the States? Not so awesome. ( )
Then we find out, it's Brave Maximus and we're thinking "Who?" Sure, we've heard of Fortress Maximus and his Headmaster partner, Cerebros (who was partnered with Spike!) and some of us had even heard of Grand Maximus, y'know, the one with a Pretender shell and the God Sword? Yeah, that guy. But...Brave Maximus? Whodat?!
Brave Maximus ended up being this really cool repaint (and my personal favorite) of the Maximus mold in a darkened cityscape color set. Vibrant red splashed across almost neon blue and all wrapped up in a murky nighttime blue, dotted with little dashes of yellow to emulate little windows with lights on. It ended up being quite the pretty picture!
This time, however, he came with Brave (in place of Cerebros) and Plasma (Spike's out of a job!) but this all came with a pretty steep price... No Gasket or Grommet (so no Cog!) and no weapons for Max himself (aside from what came installed on his body)
PLEASE NOTE: The guns and sword you'll see Max sporting in this gallery did not come with the Takara or Sonokong (South Korea) release of the figure. There have been contests in the past that did produce those weapons officially, but most Brave Maxes sporting the weaponry obtained them through reproduction services that made molds of the original weapons and copied them. Some of the swords came legitimately from the TRU Japan exclusive God Fire Convoy set. (Repro weapons... Does that make them the first 3rd party products? Hmm....)
Still, even with the cuts in place, the price tag made for Brave Maximus to be a solid value and a worthy addition to one's collection. It was nice to see such a large figure make a comeback and for collectors to be given a second chance to obtain (at that time) the largest Transformer and do so affordably.

I especially love the shots of Megabolt Maximus (that's a canon thing now, btw).
The only thing that could make this gallery even more wonderful would be more shots of Brave Max combined with the Megatron Megabolt mold's other decos (KB Toys regular Megabolt and Beast Wars Returns Megahead Megatron), or even comparison shots of all three Maxes each combined with a unique Megatron Megabolt mold head.

This toy is one I have a story about, but it's really bittersweet and I am in no safely sober state to dare writing down the details right now. Suffice it to say that this is one that really started to cement my status as being truly back into this hobby after some time away.

There were definitely unlicensed garage kits in the '90s (and maybe '80s) sold at Comiket. There was also the Unicron.com Beast Machines accessory kit also from 2000.

I was fortunate to ride the CarRobots wave of neo-G1/Beast Wars Millennial fun, and had hoped the series would expand. The subsequent Unicron Trilogy could not compete with the magic I felt with this series, nor capture, for me, the real sense of a "new G1 era" reaching our shores from the mysterious, ultra-modern coolness of Japan/Takara. To me, it was like experiencing Diaclone evolving into the 1984 G1 line all over again. That was and remains the fun of the CarRobts/Transformers2000/RID line for me, and I'm glad of the memories it created of that period, when a fresh new era came rushing upon us with untold hopes for the future!

Thanks, man. I appreciate it! It's one of the only times I really feel like writing and letting myself go in these news posts. It's nice to see that a number of people actually like my method of write up for these, that's good to know.
